Duty to assist

February 22, 2018 - Sharon Young, Analyst

In March 2017, I wrote a blog post entitled “Assisting the Applicant” about what the Commissioner means when he refers to the best practice of assisting the applicant. It discussed how government institutions and local authorities should respond to access to information requests openly, accurately, and completely.

Since then, both The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) and The Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (LA FOIP) has been amended to include an explicit duty to assist.

For more information about the duty to assist, check out my office’s resource Understanding the Duty to Assist: A Guide for Public Bodies: https://oipc.sk.ca/assets/understanding-the-duty-to-assist.pdf.
